1、What is Turnitin

Turnitin is an online service to check the similarities on submitted papers. Student submitted papers are compared and matching to sources in the Turnitin repositories. As a result, Originality Report (a.k.a similarity report) are generated automatically for student and teacher references. The report highlighted  the phase or sentences which matched and regarded they are similar. The original text, format, imagery and layout of the submitted paper remain unchanged in the report. The matching sources are presented in a user-friendly format, such as indicating the extent of matching text found by colours. It also turns out a percentage of highlighted text called similarity index.

Turnitin also facilitating teacher online grading though Grademark, if teacher grading and giving comment in the Grademark, student could access the grade and comments after the post date.

2、How it works?

Turnitin access different text based sources from internet pages, news, journal article, books and student submissions. Those sources will be processed into patterns and digital signals then stored into their repositories. When student submit their work, Turnitin will extract the student submission's text and process it as the sources in same way. Then the signals and patterns will be perform matching with Turnitin's repositories. After the matching and comparison, Turnitin will generate a similarity report which highlighting the phases or sentences which they found similar.
